Evelyn C. “Corrine” Hayes will serve as Tucumcari District 5’s representative on the Tucumcari school board after she beat out two opponents in a race that saw only 4.3 percent, or 197 of the city’s 4,532 voters, cast ballots.
Tucumcari voters also approved the continuation of a $3 million bond issue. The measure received 138 “yes” votes and 49 “no” votes.
The bond issue is not expected to raise taxes in the district, Superintendent Aaron McKinney said.
In Logan, Tommy Bruhn retained his school board seat for a third term, beating Jimmy Valentine in a 120-57 race.
Tucumcari’s District 5 race and Logan’s Position 2 contest were the only two school board races in which there was opposition Tuesday.
In House, Phillip R. Runyon received 13 write-in votes for the Position 5 seat for which no candidates filed to run.
In Tucumcari, Hayes received 47 votes to beat Todd H. Smith, who received 11 votes, and Judy Frances Martinez, who gathered 10 votes.
“I’d like to thank everybody who supported me,” Hayes said. “I will try to do my best to do a good job” as a school board member.
Smith said, “I’m glad she got it” about Hayes’ victory. “I hope she gets in there and does a good job for our school system.”
Martinez could not be reached Tuesday.
In Logan, Bruhn won his third term in a race that saw nearly 21 percent of eligible voters, 198 of 957, turn out.
“I’m proud of our schools,” Bruhn said. “I’m glad people turned out to vote, and I want to thank all the voters.”
He also praised his opponent.
“I applaud Mr. Valentine for being willing to run,” he said.
Valentine could not be reached Tuesday.
