Tesla Motors will establish a Supercharging station in Tucumcari for its electric vehicles, according to Patrick Vanderpool, executive director of the Greater Tucumcari Economic Development Corporation.

Vanderpool said the station is currently in its design phase but will be located in front of Tucumcari’s Holiday Inn Express motel at 2624 S. Adams St.

A Supercharger can restore a battery within 10 percent of being depleted to 80 percent capacity in 30 minutes, according to the Tesla Motors website. In 75 minutes, the Supercharger can deliver a full charge. On an 80 percent charge, an electric vehicle can travel 170 miles, according to the website.

For comparison, a 240-volt home electric outlet, the kind used for washers and dryers, delivers a 40 mile charge in 75 minutes, the Tesla website shows.

Attempts to reach Tesla Motors Tuesday were not successful.
