Poetry champ, other visitors to join local poets for reading

Nationally ranked Albuquerque “slam poet” Zachary Kluckman and New Mexico State Poetry Society president Fil Peach will be featured artists at Criss Cross Applesauce Open Mic Poetry Event starting at 6 p.m. Friday in Tucumcari.

The event will be held at the Eastern New Mexico Art Space gallery, 201 S. Second St., Tucumcari.

Toni Haymaker, director of Art Space, said she hopes the event will match last year’s successful event that drew 40 readers and audience members.

Peach, who performed at last year’s event, said the Tucumcari reading was the best-attended poetry reading among the state poetry society’s events last year.

Local poets scheduled to read include Levi Mericle, whose works have been published in several poetry magazines nationwide; Gregg Howard, who teaches composition and creative writing at Mesalands Community College; poet and songwriter Jake Walker; Katrina Guarasio; and Jesus Lucero.

The reading is open to any poet who would like to read his or her work. Readers and others interested in the event may receive more information by calling Artspace at (575) 461-9908 or emailing [email protected]

Event sponsors include the Eastern New Mexico Arts and Culture Center, the McMullen Foundation, Mesalands Community College, the New Mexico State Poetry Society, Tapestry of Sound and the Xcel Energy Foundation.
