Tucumcari ranks highest in housing affordability

Tucumcari is the lowest-cost housing market in New Mexico and ranks 21st in the nation in housing affordability, according to smartasset.com, a nationwide home finance website.

Asees Singh, Smartasset’s spokesperson, said “Yes. Tucumcari ranked as the most affordable place in New Mexico and ranked 21 nationally.”

Tucumcari Commissioner Ruth Ann Litchfield announced Tucumcari’s placing in the study at a city commmission meeting on Thursday.

On the website, Tucumcari’s rank is shown on a map. Scrolling over the No. 1 teardrop mark on Quay County reveals a box that indicates closing costs on a house in the city average $2,135, the city’s annual property tax averages $281. It also shows average annual mortgage insurance costs are $236 a year and annual mortgage payments average $2,655.
