Make sure you get your paper from us

And so step No. 1 is under way.

We have found someone who is stealing our newspapers out of the rack, and then delivering them to people. I do not know for sure at this point, but I guess that those receiving newspapers from this guy are probably paying him. But we have witnessed the theft, and have witnessed the action of delivering.

As always, there are multiple ways of thinking about this.

There is the remote possibility that those receiving the papers are involved with stealing the papers — paying a couple of bucks for the theft and delivery. I am hard pressed to believe this personally.

The most likely possibility is this person has been stealing the newspapers, then delivering them to customers who are not aware they are stolen.

So how do you know if you are getting a legitimate paper, or if you are paying a thief?

One, all special requests for delivery — porch, in the door, or otherwise — are made through the office and not with the carrier directly. If you made a special request of your carrier directly, then odds are that you are paying someone for a stolen newspaper.

Two, all of our newspapers are either in an orange bag, or rubber banded, or both. No exceptions on this.

Three, all billing comes from our office. Our carriers do not bill customers, and they do not collect from customers. If you have someone coming to the door collecting or you are sending your payment to the carrier directly then you paying for a stolen newspaper.

Why should you care as long as you are getting your newspaper? Because this person — or persons — is about to be turned in, and we are going to take all steps possible to prosecute for the theft. If you paid this person for what you think is your subscription, the odds are then that you are going to be out the money that you thought you were paying for a newspaper subscription.

I am going to remain positive and assume that those of you that have been receiving stolen newspapers are not in on this, and that those of you involved are being scammed. I would hate the idea that someone has been stealing your money as well because you are about to be out that money.

Either way, this particular scam is coming to an end. Those involved are going to be arrested and we will be seeking justice for their actions.

If you have any questions regarding the legitimacy of your newspaper subscription, please contact us at the office and we will be more than willing to check the status of your subscription.

As for the thief: We have found you, and we are going after you.
