The Logan Lady Longhorns 20-7, have advanced to play Mountainair Tuesday in the 2A girls state basketball tournament after routing the Mescalero Apache Lady Chiefs 63-28 Friday at Logan.

The Lady Longhorns held Mescalero Apache to 11 points in the first half and 17 points in the second half. The Lady Longhorns defense allowed the Lady Chiefs 11-13, to score double digits only in the third period (10 points).

“I was proud of how tough our girls played on offense,” said Clair Rachor, Lady Longhorns head coach.

Lady Longhorns senior Shana Sorrels led the offense against the Lady Chiefs with 16-points.

“We have to be ready for anything in this tournament,” Sorrels said.

The 11th-seed Lady Mustangs 18-10, beat sixth-seed Mora 45-40 on Friday to advance to quarterfinals match against Logan at Bernalillo high school in Albuquerque.

“It opens your eyes, when a high-seed teams pulls an upset over a mid-ranked team, but that’s the nature of the state basketball tournament,” Rachor said.

Sorrels said the Lady Longhorns need to work as a team and focus on winning one game at a time. The team has a shared goal to win a state title, she said, “though everyone on the team knows they must be focused at the task at hand in order to reach that goal.”

Rachor said the Lady Longhorns are not looking past any opponent and will be focused and prepared when they step onto the court with the Lady Mustangs.

Rachor said the Lady Mustangs are a “pretty good sized team,” a much different height issue to deal with than the Lady Longhorns would have prepared for against Mora. He said if the Lady Longhorns can get into a full court game against the Lady Mustangs, he likes their chances.

Rachor said it could be difficult if Lady Mustangs turned it into a half court game with their size. He said the main key will be to control the tempo of the game.

The Lady Longhorns beat the Lady Mustangs in the first round of the 2014 state basketball tournament at Logan.

Rachor said neither he nor the Lady Longhorns are even going to factor last year’s win into the equation.

“Its a totally different team that we will be facing,” Rachor said. “With their win over Mora on Friday they are showing everyone they have come to play.”
