Former resident dead after Tuesday shooting in Amarillo

Staff report

A former Tucumcari resident is dead and an unidentified woman hospitalized for life-threatening injuries following an attempted murder/suicide in Amarillo, according to the Amarillo Police Department.

At 6:25 a.m. Tuesday, APD officers responded to a 911 call reporting shots fired at 6215 Belpree near Bell Street and Interstate 40, said Lt. Erick Bohannon, APD Special Crimes Unit.

Bohannon said officers arrived and found a female gunshot victim, who was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. He said officers also found the shooting suspect, later identified as Stacey Edward Burns, 52, formerly of Tucumcari, deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Bohannon said.

Bohannon said the initial investigation has revealed Burns shot the female victim, whose identity was withheld, and then shot himself. He said there is no indication that anyone other than the two were in the residence.

Bohannon said the woman has undergone surgeries and is still recovering at an area hospital.
