Coughenour named outstanding member of retiree group

Evelyn Coughenour of Tucumcari has been selected as the Outstanding Unit Member of the Quay County Association of Educational Retirees.

Coughener began working for the Tucumcari Public Schools in 1970 as a secretary at an elementary school and later transferred to Tucumcari Middle School. She also became active in the Tucumcari School Federal Credit Union, serving as board president and later as its manager.

She retired from education employment in 1984.

Coughener has been active in church and community activities, she said.

She has served three terms as secretary of the Tucumcari Senior Citizens Advisory Board for the Tucumcari Senior Citizens Center.

She and her late husband Warren were also active in the New Mexico and Tucumcari Good Sams, a national travel organization, in 1999.

She also served with Altrusa for 31 years, she said. getting involved in many projects, especially literacy programs.

As a member of the Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, she became a "pink lady" to serve at the hospital's Information Desk. She has served five terms as president of the auxiliary and earned 100 volunteer hours each year.

After retirement in 1984, she joined the Quay County Association of Educational Retirees and has served four years as secretary/treasurer.
