Rain compresses Rattler district baseball schedule

The Tucumcari Rattlers baseball team 9-10, 4-1, has rescheduled Tuesday’s double-header against a district opponent, the Raton Tigers, for today in Tucumcari.

Monday’s rain was welcomed by residents, but for the Rattlers who have state seeding on Sunday and four games left to play, the rain could not have come at a worse time.

Alarcon said the Rattlers are focusing on the task at hand, which is a tough Raton Tigers team that is only a few years removed from the 4A state championship.

“We will have to adjust our game plan when it comes to our pitching,” Alarcon said.

Alarcon said the Rattlers’ two starting pitchers Saul Moriel and Javier Villanueva will see action against Raton, which is currently in first place (6-0) in the District 5 3A standings with Tucumcari in second. Against Clayton, the Rattlers will need to call on their reserve pitchers.

On Saturday, the Rattlers scored a controlling 6-2 home win over the Santa Rosa Lions. This was an improvement from the 7-4 loss they suffered on Thursday to Laguna Acoma in Tucumcari.

“We just have to concentrate on being strong mentally and not making errors that allow runs,” Alarcon said.

Game time 4 p.m. today against Raton at Tucumcari.

The Tucumcari Lady Rattlers softball team 9-9, 2-2 is riding a three-game winning streak as they enter the heart of their district run.

The Lady Rattlers played the Santa Rosa Lady Lions on Tuesday (score was not available before publication).

On April 23 the Lady Rattlers routed the Lady Lions 21-6 in Tucumcari.

The Lady Rattlers have had some difficulty scoring runs in their late innings but they started off with scoring nine runs in the first two innings and 12 more in the next two innings to win by the 15 run rule.

The team needs to come out with intensity in every game in order to have an offensive production like we did against Santa Rosa, said Alyssa Martinez, freshman.

Martinez had a two run RBI in the second inning. In the third inning on defense Martinez caught a pop fly and fielded two hits and threw the runner out at first base at short stop.

Currently the Lady Rattlers sit in third place in the District 5 3A standings behind first place Raton and second place Laguna Acoma.

Their next game will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Raton.

The Logan Longhorns baseball team 7-8, 0-2 will play their next games on Friday at Grady/San Jon and on Tuesday against Melrose at Logan.

Game time: 4 p.m. Friday at Grady/San Jon and 3 p.m. Tuesday against Melrose at Logan.

The Lady Longhorns softball team 1-11, will play its final games of the season Friday at Santa Rosa.

Game time: 2 p.m. at Santa Rosa.

Track and field

The Rattlers and Lady Rattlers will be competing on Saturday at the District 5 3A track meet in Santa Rosa.

The Logan Longhorns and Lady Longhorns will be competing on May 9 at the 1A-3A State Track Meet in Albuquerque.

The San Jon Coyotes and Lady Coyotes will be competing on Saturday at the District 4 1A track meet in Fort Sumner.
