New Chamber director starts

Eve Calderon began her duties on May 26 as the new director of the Tucumcari Quay County Chamber of Commerce.

“I’m becoming familiar with the administrative portion of the job; the rest is just getting out and introducing myself to the community,” Calderon said.

Calderon said during her first week as the chamber director, she spent time learning about the job and its duties from former director Patsy Gresham.

Calderon replaces Gresham, who quit following her appointment on April 17 as the Quay County treasurer by county commissioners.

Gresham was appointed to fill out the remainder of the term vacated by the resignation of elected treasurer Nadine Angel; the term ends Dec. 31, 2016.

Gresham had served as chamber director since 2011.

“I am just so thankful for all the help and guidance Patsy has given me since I began this job,” Calderon said.

Calderon said there has been a lot of walk-in traffic seeking information about the Rockabilly on the Route event that starts Thursday in Tucumcari. She said Gresham had done the leg work promoting this event. The continued interest in the event by tourists both in person and on the phone has her excited about the beneficial impact it will have on the community.

Calderon said the reason she applied to be the chamber director was to help make a difference in the community. She said she is looking forward to meeting the public and businesses owners as she works to promote Tucumcari and Quay County.

The chamber board felt that Eve was the best applicant for the job and will do a great job as chamber director, said chamber president Kathi McClelland.

McClelland said the chamber board had a lot of qualified applicants and appreciates all applicants’ interest in the position. She said the chamber board has complete confidence in Calderon.

Calderon said she has lived in Tucumcari for two years and had worked as a secretary at New Mexico Property Group.

Calderon said she lived in El Paso, Texas – where she worked as an operations manager for GC Services – before moving to Tucumcari.

“I’m still settling in but my door is open and I’m ready to do what I can,” Calderon said.
