The Tucumcari Lady Rattlers varsity and junior varsity cross country teams placed first and second Saturday in first competition of the year at Roswell.

Roswell was a tough event that had a course with a variety of surfaces the team had to run, said Kaycee Lease, who placed second overall for the Lady Rattlers.

In total, the Lady Rattler varsity team had six runners who placed 12th or better.

They were: Sierra Blanca Sandoval, fifth place; Alyssa Martinez, sixth place; Mariah Ruvalcaba-Vasquez, ninth place; Melina Encinias in 10th place; and Kyeli Collins finishing in 12th place.

Four JV Lady Rattlers placed in the top 5: Erin Encinias in second, Ambera Rivera in third, Aaliyah Brown in fourth and Melanie Jones in fifth.

“The girls ran great in Roswell and they are hoping to carry that over Thursday at the Lovington invite,” said cross country coach Gary Hittson.

Martinez said they are expecting some strong teams at Lovington, including Hobbs and Alamogordo.

Collins said the team needs to have a solid run and will work through the week to prepare for the event.

The Rattlers boys cross country team placers were: Steven Chaney in ninth, Simon Ortiz in 12th, Christopher Arrellano in 13th and Treston Peterson in 22nd place.

The Lovington Invitational takea place at 2 p.m., Thursday, in Lovington.
