The Tucumcari Rattlers need to move past last weekends 51-0 loss to Estancia and focus on being ready for Dexter on Friday, said Wayne Ferguson, Rattlers head football coach.
Ferguson said it was rough facing a stout Bears team who looks just as sharp as they did when they wont the 3A state championship last year. He said the Rattlers can’t dwell on the loss, they need to learn from it and keep pushing forward.
The Rattlers, 1-2, also have an added distraction through the week with homecoming festivities.
“Come in ready to work this week,” Ferguson said during Monday’s practice. “When you are out on this field practicing your minds needs to be focused.”
Ferguson said Dexter has a potent offense that is going to be hard to contain. He said they have a set of running backs with speed and their returning quarterback is capable of moving the ball efficiently down the field.
“We need to come out and play defense like we did against Texico two weeks ago,” Ferguson said. “We have to come out with intensity from he very start.”
Game time: 7 p.m., Friday night at Rattler Stadium.
8-man
The Logan Longhorns, 1-1, will be ridding the momentum of a 56-6 win against Dora/Elida as they travel Friday to take on the defending eight-man state champion Buffaloes at Melrose.
“We’ve got to go in there and be ready to give 100 percent from the very start,” said Michael Estrada, Longhorns quarterback.
Estrada moved the ball downfield effectively against Dora/Elida, connecting with receivers and handing off the ball to the running backs including Jared Lubera who rushed 32-yards for the game’s first touchdown.
“Once I got the ball I just kept moving my feet looking for the open field,” Lubera said.
Lubera is also the teams kicker and was perfect from the tee, kicking seven extra points.
Estrada also added to the scored board rushing for 185-yards and three touchdowns against the Coyotes. Estrada’s scores included an 88-yard touchdown rush that closed out the first quarter.
The next three scores for the Longhorns came from the defense and special teams.
On the Coyotes first play in the second quarter, defensive linemen Ryan Bruhn forced a fumble that was picked up by Lubera and returned 28-yards for a touchdown.
The Coyotes began moving the ball down the field with passes and rushes from quarterback Hayden Skinner. Skinner had moved the Coyotes deep into Longhorn’s territory but the drive was stopped when Brinton Roach intercepted a pass and returned it 87-yards for a touchdown.
Hayden scored the Coyotes only score in the following drive carrying the ball himself into the endzone from three-yards out.
Although, on the ensuing kick-off Longhorn’s Gary Loveland returned the kick 83-yards for a touchdown.
Hayden began to move the offense down field on the following drive and was hurt trying to rush for a first down. Hayden was taken off the field by ambulance. Hayden’s condition is not known.
The injury would close out the first half of the game.
Lubera would seal the win for the Longhorns in the third quarter with a 57-yard rush for a touchdown.
Lubera said against Melrose the Longhorn’s offensive line will have to play as strong as they did against the Coyotes. He said the offensive line pushed the defense back and gave the runners a gap to run through.

6-man
The Grady/San Jon Coyotes are on the hunt for their fourth win of the season Friday against the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe.
“Our defense has been doing a great job of rushing the quarterback and catching the runners in the backfield,” said Bobby Gomez, Coyotes head coach.
Gomez said Adrian Lunford and Jayden Garrett have been the leaders on the defense. He said on offense the Coyotes are running the ball and running it well.
Gomez said even though the Roadrunners are winless the Coyotes will not be not taking the team lightly. He said the game plan is to play hard every game.
