Special to QCS

The Mesalands Community College men's rodeo team won two championship titles in saddle bronc riding and in tie-down roping at their first rodeo of the season on Friday and Saturday at Diné College in Tsaile, Arizona.

Mesalands freshman Clay Stremler of Winnemucca, Nevada, took first place in the first round, third in the short round, and first in the average in saddle bronc riding. Stremler earned a total of 146 points and won the championship title at his first college rodeo competition.

Sophomore Chance Stucker of Oroville, Washington, had solid runs in both the short and the long round in the tie-down roping event. Stucker finished first in the average and secured the championship title.

Team ropers Kasey Brown of Silver City and Clay Lee of Portales placed in the short round and took fourth place in the average. Tyler Stegall from Morristown, Arizona, and Arianna Assini of Oracle, Washington, placed fifth in the short round and fifth in the average. Jacob Rounds of Broadalbin, New York, and Koly Ray Spears of Lovington split fourth and fifth places in the first round.

In steer wrestling, Stegall was third in the long round, fourth in the short round, and fourth place in the average.

Assini also placed in the first round and in the average in the goat tying event.

“I think our first rodeo went pretty well, of course we left some points that I think we could have earned. I was very impressed by the performance of your freshmen and our entire team,” said Tim Abbott, Mesalands rodeo coach. “Overall, we know what we need to work on and we are ready for the next rodeo competition. Both our men's and women's teams are capable of winning those team titles and that's what we plan to do.”

The Mesalands rodeo team will compete next Friday and Saturday at the Cochise College in Douglas, Arizona.
