The undefeated Grady/San Jon Coyotes will be the only area high school team in action this Friday when they play host to district opponent Lake Arthur at San Jon.
The Coyotes – who’ve won all five of their games, including two in league play -- are looking for their sixth win of the season and first place in the district 1 standings when they take on the 4-1, 2-0, Panthers.
The Coyotes are going to be ready to play some football Friday when they step out onto the field, said head coach Bobby Gomez.
The Coyotes are coming off a bye week but Gomez said they have been continuing to work on improving during practice.
During the bye week, Gomez said he scouted the Panthers when they played Saturday at Floyd.
Gomez said Floyd was able to contain their run game and they began using the passing game. He said the Coyotes will look to contain the Panthers run game while being sure to pressure their quarterback. The key will be to defend the receivers and sealing up the running lanes as not to give up a big play.
Game time 4: p.m., Friday at San Jon.
8-man
The Logan Longhorns -- 4-2, and 2-0 in league play -- will have a bye week due to Foothill dropping out of the 8-man season.
The Longhorns won 50-21 Friday at Menaul.
After a slow start this season the team has found its rhythm out on the field and continues to improve each week, said head coach Kene Terry.
Terry said the bye week come at tough time during district play, but the team will take the time to rest and prepare for its Oct. 23 game against Mescalero Apache at Logan.
