Donations by the Ministry of Hope and local schools help provide food for local families in need during the holiday season.

On Tuesday, members of the Ministry of Hope handed out more than 100 Thanksgiving meal boxes to local families with three or more members.

The boxes contain either a turkey or ham along with side dishes, including stuffing and vegetables, said Doyle Fraiser, MOH director.

Fraiser said along with the Thanksgiving boxes being provided by MOH, the donation of 3,200 pounds of food this past week by the Tucumcari public schools will help feed area residents in need.

On Nov. 18, the Tucumcari Middle School Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America concluded its annual Thanksgiving food drive.

The FCCLA students collected 1,175 items that will be donated to the MOH along with food items collected from the middle school classes a total of 1,821 food items, said Jodie Lamm, FCCLA advisor.

Lamm said the FCCLA provided prizes for the class that collected the most items for the food drive. She said each class did good collecting food items to help out the community.

Fraiser said on Friday, the MOH collected donated food items from the elementary and high school in Tucumcari. He said donations from schools help the MOH, especially in the winter and holiday months when the need is greater.

“Every donation helps, the efforts of the students at Tucumcari schools is truly appreciated,” Fraiser said.

Mesalands Community College also is having a canned food drive that will run through Dec. 14, for the MOH pantry. Donations of food can dropped off at the Mesalands Library and any monetary donations will need to be taken to the Business Office.

Mesalands also raised $235 through its “Giving Tree” program. The money will be donated to the Tucumcari Blessings in a Backpack program that provides local children with nutritious food to eat on the weekends.
