Hazardous road conditions for the area

Road conditions on Interstate 40 eastbound and westbound from Tucumcari and on US Highway 54 have been upgraded to fair, according to the New Mexico Department of Transportation.

The road conditions had been affected Friday and Saturday by snow and ice accumulations on I-40 and US Highway 54.

Visibility was limited due to moderate snow motorists were advised to reduce speed and proceed with caution.

Quay County Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police had reports of overturned vehicles on Interstate 40 and vehicles sliding off the road on I-40 and US Highway 54 due to icy road conditions.

Conditions from mile marker 305 to mile marker 355 -- Tucumcari to Nara Visa -- on US Highway 54 were severe.

Roads had black ice and visibility is limited due to cloudy conditions. Crews from the NMDOT were out plowing, salting and sanding bridges.
