Larry Kelsay had a busy weekend as Farwell’s police chief.
He said he pulled probably 20 cars from snowdrifts and helped about 30 people find shelter at Farwell’s First Baptist Church as a blizzard closed the highways in and out of town.
“We’ve had portable garages fly up and hit an electric pole, had a roof blown off, trees falling down; pretty much everything they’ve had in Clovis, but there are just two of us (police officers),” Kelsay said.
And then things got exciting.
About 1 a.m. Monday, Farwell police received a call that a woman was about to give birth. With the roads closed, and Farwell without a hospital, there was no choice but for the baby to be born at home.
Kelsay called a local paramedic, Weldon Kube; he could not get his vehicle out but agreed to walk a block to the church, where Kelsay picked him up.
A second paramedic, Craig Giesbrecht, soon joined them at the woman’s home on Seventh Street and the baby was born about 3:30 a.m.
“It was an easy birth,” Kelsay said. “Everything went fine. No complications.”
Kelsay said he checked on the family Monday afternoon and found mother and baby were still doing well.
The chief declined to name the family, but gained permission to share a photo.
