Rattler wrestling team doubles up on mat time

Staff Report

The Tucumcari Rattlers wrestling team will be seeing twice the action these next few weeks as Head Coach Eddie Encinias plans to attend two wrestling events a week.

“We did not wrestle up to our potential last weekend at Saint Michael’s,” Encinias said. “We’ve got to start getting things in line before district.”

Encinias said the Rattlers lets some matches get away from them at Saint Michael’s in Santa Fe.

The only three placers for the Rattlers varsity program were 3. Antonio Norton Jr., 220 pounds, Joseph Martinez, 126 pounds and 4. Isaiah Valverde, 285 pounds.

Encinias said the team was coming off the Christmas break heading into Saint Michael’s, but that should not have had such an impact on their performance. He said this week the Rattlers will get some much needed mat time competing Thursday at Amarillo High School in Amarillo, Texas and Saturday at Bernalillo High School in Albuquerque.

Encinias said the Rattlers have to use the added mat time to improve and strengthen their abilities. He said the team is heading into the toughest part of the season with the Cardinal Classic on Jan. 29, at Las Vegas and District Duals on Feb. 6 at Robertson High School in Las Vegas.

“We can’t go into those meets looking as sluggish as we did this past weekend,” Encinias said. “These guys are amazing athletes and they have the talent and skill to compete and win district and state.”
