Serving the High Plains

Letter to the Editor

When the pope spoke about Donald Trump’s Christianity, it got me to thinking of some things that do not make sense.

Republicans in their debates and ads are always expressing fear and mad at someone or something and stressing their Christianity.

Listed are a few quotes we have all heard in our churches at one time or another and some situations or positions listed where they re completely ignored.

We are all aware that when you start quoting the Bible there are those who can quote something that seemingly contradicts it.

I do not claim to be an expert in this field, just expressing how it opposes what we are taught.

“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.”

Republicans assail “entitlements” every other breath. Of course the entitlements they refer to are designed to assist the poor.

If it aids the poor, Republicans are against it.

There are entitlements that never get any exposure, favorable tax laws that enable inequality, eliminating financial laws that wound up devastating the poor more than anyone. The latter entitlements benefit only the rich and of course political-contribution recipients.

“I was hungry and you gave me food — I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”

When the recessions hit, which they enabled by deregulating the finance industry (with Democratic help), Republicans became highly perturbed over the increase in food stamps and put a lot of effort into cutting them down or out.

At the same time in the agriculture bill, they had no qualms about the high subsidies for rich farmers and corporate farms.

Republicans want to build fences and are afraid of Syrians, Mexicans and Muslims.

Some say giving the unfortunate assistance kills their ambition.
