Lady Longhorns play Melrose today for 2A championship

The No.1 seed Logan Lady Longhorns will play for the 2A State Basketball Championship at 5:30 p.m., today against district rival No. 7 seed Melrose Lady Buffaloes at Wisepies Arena (The Pit) at the University Of New Mexico at Albuquerque.

The top-ranked Lady Longhorns are riding an eight-game win streak going into the championship game. They will be playing for their third state title in school history (1980 and 2013) previous championship seasons.

The Lady Longhorns are 2-0 against Melrose this season having won on Feb. 11 57-42 and on Feb. 19 51-43.

Melrose on the other hand is going for their schools seventh state title. The Lady Buffaloes have been state champions six times and runner-up five times.

This will be the Lady Buffaloes' fourth title appearance in five years and if they win, it will be their third title in five years (2012 and 2015) previous championship season.

In fact, the Lady Longhorns and Lady Buffaloes account for three of the previous four state championships in their respective classes.

In this years state tournament, the Lady Longhorns won both their first round and quarterfinal games by double digits. On March 4 they beat Navajo Pine 81-53 at Logan and on March 8 they beat Mescalero Apache 59-46 at Bernalillo High School in Bernalillo.

To advance to the championship game the Lady Longhorns played their closest game Thursday winning 49-40 against No. 4 Magdalena at Bernalillo High School in Bernalillo.

Against Magdalena, the Lady Longhorns outscored their opponents in the first 22-12 in the first half and the lead would hold throughout the remainder of the game.

Leading the Lady Longhorns was guards Kaylee Foote with 18 points and McKenna Stone with 10 points.

The Lady Buffaloes have won their three state tournament games to advance to the championship.

On March 4 the Lady Buffaloes beat 10 seed Mesa Vista 60-37 at Melrose, on March 8 they beat No. 2 seed Ramah 67-61 and on March 10 they defeated No. 3 Tatum 59-55.
