Tucumcari man arrested in shooting

Staff Report

A 22-year-old Tucumcari man was arrested and charged Friday with attempted first-degree murder following an early morning shooting on the 900 block of East Rankin.

Raymond Chavez has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, contribution to the delinquency of a minor and possession of drug paraphernalia. Chavez remains in the Quay County Detention Center on $100,000 cash bond.

At 3:38 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a 911 call reporting a prowler on the 1000 block of East Hines, said Police Chief Jason Braziel.

Braziel said officers discovered a male subject who had suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound, who then was taken to Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital for treatment. The identity of the man was not released. His condition was not reported.

Braziel said through further investigation, officers determined that the shooting had occurred at a residence on the 900 block of East Rankin Avenue. He said officers identified the shooter and then arrested Chavez and booked him into QCDC.

Braziel said this is still an active investigation and additional information regarding the shooting will be released later.
