The Tucumcari Rattlers will compete in the Panthers baseball tournament Thursday at Pecos.

The Rattlers, 1-2, opened their season at the Demons tournament on Thursday and Friday at Dexter.

“I am proud of how the Rattlers bounced back after the first two loses at Pecos,” said Tony Alarcon, Rattlers head coach.

During the tournament, the Rattlers lost 25-1 to Loving and 14-8 to Mesilla Valley Christian School. The Rattlers beat Pecos 7-5 for their first win of the season.

Alarcon said the Rattlers only have 13 players on their varsity roster with five currently set in the pitching rotation. He said the team needs to slow down and concentrate on playing fundamental baseball.

“The Rattlers need to play with confidence and not lose their cool when they are under pressure,” Alarcon said.

Alarcon said when the team doesn’t concentrate they hurt themselves with errors that allow runs for the other teams.

Game time: 2 p.m., Thursday at Pecos

The Tucumcari Lady Rattlers softball team will play their first home game Thursday against the Logan Lady Longhorns.

The Lady Rattlers, 1-2, competed on Thursday and Friday at Lady Panthers softball tournament in Pecos.

The Lady Rattlers lost their first two games to Estancia (5-4) and East Mountain (10-9). They one their third game (18-14) against Pecos.

“We are excited about this season,” said Lawrence Sena, Lady Rattlers head coach.

Sena said the Lady Rattlers had to fight back from an early deficit in the first two games of the tournament. He said the team started to get their stride but the games ended due to time limits.

Sena said several key players have returned to the team this year, along with some talented eighth-graders stepping up to play.

Thursday game will be the first game of the season for the Lady Longhorns who do not have a roster of players listed on the New Mexico Activities Association website.
