County commissioners approved an application Monday for a $20,000 grant by Quay County Emergency Manager Curtis Simpson for the installation of two additional dispatch repeater towers to better serve county residents.
Simpson presented the application for the State Homeland Security Grant to commissioners during their regular meeting at the Quay County Courthouse.
Simpson said the money will be used to add two additional dispatch repeater towers to be used by law enforcement, fire and EMS personnel. He said one will be placed at Wheatland and the other will be a joint project with Guadalupe County at Palomas.
Simpson said the Palomas tower will be used by both counties giving each better coverage in the outlining portions of the counties.
In other action, commissioners:
• Received a presentation of services offered from Souder, Miller and Associates Engineering Firm.
• Waived the fees of the County Fairgrounds for Rawhide Days animal housing.
• Approved the purchase of a fire truck for District 4 fire department.
• Approved application to the New Mexico Finance Authority for a type 5 wildland truck for District 1 at a cost of $175,000.
• Approved Resolution 27, authorizing the submission of a New Mexico Community Development and Block Grant program application to the Department of Finance.
• approved the purchase of Skid Steer Loader for $85,000 provided by previously granted capital outlay money from the state.
• Approved Resolution 25, authorizing the county to submit a DWI application to the Department of Finance Authority.
• Heard a presentation of activity report from Sheriff Russell Shafer, who said that between Feb. 3 and March 23, the sheriff's office answered 318 calls for service; served 142 civil papers; and received 18 in-state transports. The department also issued 13 citations and served 19 arrest warrants.
• Held an executive session for limited personnel matters and threatened or pending litigation; commissioners took no action.
