Investigators still waiting on forensics

The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is awaiting forensic evidence testing results from a more than six-month-long investigation of a shooting that resulted in the death of a Tucumcari teen.

Officers of the investigation bureau assumed the lead in investigating the shooting that occurred on Oct. 1, 2015 in the 700 block of South Seventh Street in Tucumcari. The shooting killed 17-year-old Patrick Gonzales and injured a 15-year-old juvenile male.

With the seven-month mark approaching in this investigation, members of Gonzales' family have expressed their frustration on social media websites. Their posts have called for an arrest and demanded answers about the shooting that claimed the life of their loved one. They are demanding justice for the killer of who they call “Lil Pat.”

Family members have declined a request by the Quay County Sun for an interview on the advice of legal counsel.

Forensic evidence, including DNA and crime scene samples, were collected and submitted to the state lab, said State Police Sgt. Elizabeth Armijo, the agency's public information officer.

“That type of evidence takes time to analyze thoroughly and properly,” Armijo said.

Armijo said many of the details of this case must be kept secret because the case still being under investigation. She also said the case hasn't been presented to the Tenth District Attorney's Office for the same reason.

Armijo said police have not yet made any arrests.
