Voter registration, party changes on the rise for upcoming election

QCS Senior Writer

New voter registration and party changes continue to increase daily for the 2016 primary election with early voting starting Tuesday in Quay County.

There have been at least 20 people daily who come in to register or change their party affiliation for the Primary Election, said County Clerk Veronica Marez.

Marez said a voter who has registered or declared a party affiliation before the 5 p.m., deadline on Tuesday will be able to vote in the primary.

The difference between registered Democrats and Republican voters in Quay County has been cut in half since March 8, said chief deputy county clerk Ellen White.

White said as of today, there are 5,980 registered voters in Quay County; 2,691 are registered Democrats, 2,160 are Republicans and 1,129 are independent. She said at the start of the year, Democrats outnumbered Republicans by more than 1,000; that number is now 531.

White said current voter registration rolls have declined since the 2014 primary. She explained that two years ago, the county had 6,070 registered voters, 2,938 Democrats, 2,046 Republicans and 1,086 independents.

White said elections officials expect the number of new voters and party shifts to increase until the Tuesday deadline.
