City works to improve museum

An application is being submitted by the city to help improve operation and promotion of the Tucumcari Historical Museum.

The city is nearing completion of the application to the American Alliance of Museums for its museum assistant program, said City Manager Jared Langenegger, who outlined the purpose and benefits of the application Thursday while delivering his manager's report to the City Commission.

Langenegger said the application would include an organizational assessment of the museum that will review all aspects of its operations and attractions. He said that upon the completion of assessment, the museum will be able to operate as a 21st-century museum with a strong understanding of core standards good practices that support sustainability.

Langenegger said the program includes strategic planning and a resource management system that works with the museum's mission. He said if approved for this program, the city would look into applying for other assistance programs to benefit the museum.

Langenegger also discussed a recent meeting with VFW Post 2528 Commander Richard Martinez and Santa Rosa City Manager Tim Dodge that dealt with designating Tucumcari as a stop for Santa Rosa's annual Labor Day motorcycle run.

“This would be a great opportunity to work with our neighboring community and bring people into Tucumcari,” Langenegger said.

Langenegger said there has been talk about the possibility of hosting a regional motorcycle rally to build on Santa Rosa's already-popular event.

Other items before the commission included:

• Approving a change order number 4 for the Well Rehab project reducing the final cost of the project by $70,207.87.

• Denial of a variance application for 2016-01 to open the 100 and 200 blocks of West Oak Avenue to create a road conecting to State Highway 104.
