Families gather to remember

More than 150 people attended Saturday’s dedication of a veterans memorial at the Autumn Blessing assisted living home in Logan.

The veterans memorial was donated to Autumn Blessing by the family of Alfred Haws, a current resident.

Haws is a World War II veteran and a survivor of the Bataan Death March.

The memorial reads “Thank you veterans for defending our freedom. Each of these heroes stand in the unbroken line of patriots who have dared to die, that freedom might live. God Bless America.”

“This was more than a successful memorial dedication, it was a family reunion,” said Darla Pearson, an assistant administrator at Autumn Blessing.

Pearson said they have had the monument for some time, but they has several things to get done prior to the dedication. She said along with a concrete slab on which to place the memorial, additional stone markers were constructed. The stones that have the names of all current and past residents on them line the sidewalk leading to the memorial, Pearson added.

Pearson said the event was promoted as a celebration of our past, current residents and veterans. She said it took some time to contact the families of current and past residents.

“We wanted every family to have a chance to come and join us in this celebration,” Pearson said.

Miss Quay County Leah Taylor and Miss Teen Quay County Lauralann Taylor were present for the ceremonies and took turns reading the names of residents.

The color guard from Cannon Air Force Base in Clovis also was on hand to display the American flag as the memorial was dedicated.
