County officials report an increase in gross receipt tax revenue

August’s gross receipts tax collections, the greatest for the month since 2012, may foretell more months of greater-than-normal gross receipts tax collections, according to Quay County Manager Richard Primrose.

County Treasurer Patsy Gresham reported that the county received monthly gross receipts tax revenues of $224,193 for August, compared with $154,708 in June and $168,886 for July.

The big jump in August receipts, Primrose said, reflect commerce in June.

The increase came about, he said, because of some major construction projects that started that month and are likely to continue for months to come.

Among those projects are the Caprock Solar Power Project in southeastern Quay County, bridge construction on State Route 209 south of Quay, and the building of a new Fairfield Inn next to the Flying J truck stop on Mountain Road at Interstate 40.

In addition, Primrose said, receipts in restaurant meals, accommodations, health care, professional services, retail sales and utilities increased in June, as reflected in the August statement from the state Department of Finance and Administration.

Construction tax receipts, however, doubled between the July statement and the August notice, Primrose said, from $23,000 in the July statement to $47,000 in the August document.
