Submitted by Sydney Goldston

The Tucumcari High School chapter of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America in July had eight students attend the National Leadership Conference in San Diego.

Two students attended as members of the New Mexico State Executive Council and six of the students competed in STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition). The events teach students skills they will need for the rest of their lives, including public speaking, time management, teamwork, and organization.

Students compete first at the district and then at the state level, and then the top two students, or group of students, in each event move on to the national level.

Local silver medalists:

• Allyssa and Destiny Zukevich in Chapter in Review Display.

• Kami Lamm in Nutrition and Wellness.

• SaBrea Skinner, Kayla Calbert and Mark Gutierrez in Interpersonal Communications.

Christopher Arellano, the New Mexico FCCLA vice president of senior membership, attended several Leadership Academy trainings and various other workshops while at the conference. Sydney Goldston, the New Mexico FCCLA president, served on the national nominating committee, which consisted of 12 members from across the nation, and attended a few trainings as well.

“I had a great time building skills that I need for the rest of my life. I enjoyed the fun activities we did during the workshops and the Leadership Academy,” Arellano said.
