Fifteen teams attend Rattler Invite

The best of Kansas, Texas and New Mexico competed in the tourney.

The annual Tucumcari Rattler Invite wrestling tournament gave 15 teams from Kansas, Texas and New Mexico the opportunity to compete against new and challenging opponents.

"This tournament is helping to prepare us for district and state," said Tucumcari senior Antonio Norton Jr.

Norton said he thinks everybody at the tournament will gain some kind of advantage or edge from the level of competition.

"We have seen a variety of styles and techniques during the tournament," said Joseph Martinez, 138-pound wrestler.

Martinez said the tournament features the best of three states in a competition that will be the last for several teams until the new year. He said each match gives wrestlers valuable time on the mat.

"It has been interesting and educational to see the different teams," said Isaiah Valverde. "Each match might not be a victory, but they are steps toward a season of victory."

The tournament is also a chance to test the toughness of the wrestlers, said Mick Sanchez, Valencia High School head coach.

"These guys need to be ready for everything," Sanchez said. "If you don't prepare for everything you'll get caught off guard."

Sanchez said the test begins as early as 3 a.m., when the team leaves for the tournament. He said the early leave time combined with the bus ride test the team mentally and physically before the tournament even begins.

"We are glad to have been invited to this tournament for the second year," said Robert Valencia, Taos High School head coach.

Valencia said the Rattler Invite is one of the best tournament to attend. He said it gives his wrestlers a chance to see several teams that are normally outside their district.

"I can't express my thanks to everyone who helps make this tournament possible," said Eddie Encinias, Rattlers head coach.

Encinias said the team is in debt to the sponsors, volunteers, score tables workers, officials and parents.

"This tournament brings so many people into the community," Encinias said. "It's not just a benefit to this team. It boosts our city."

Tournament winner resulsts were not available by press time and will be announced in the next edition.
