Coach: Time to 'shake off the summer'

As a new year, new season approaches, coaches of the Tucumcari Rattlers began two-a-day practice with this year's football team prospects.

There is a strong group of starters returning this year, with several eager underclassmen ready to step up into the program, said Head Coach Wayne Ferguson.

More than 25 Rattlers were on the field at 7 a.m., running through drills.

Ferguson said they expect more to join the team for the practices throughout the week. Many players did not practice due to work schedules or family obligations, or they still needed a physical.

"It is time for you boys to shake off the summer," said Bryan Dunlap, assistant coach.

Dunlap said attention to details and commitment to performing the fundamentals is essential for growth and improvement as a player.

"If the team wants to be successful then each player has to be willing to give 100 percent from the very start," said Xavier Garcia, senior running back.

Garcia said he is excited for the season to start and looks forward to getting as many rushes on the field as possible.

"It's still early but the guys have already begun to show their enthusiasm," Ferguson said.
