Tucumcari graduate accepted to UNM

A 2014 Tucumcari High School graduate, Carlos Marquez, has been approved for admission to the University of New Mexico's College of Pharmacy.

Amy S. Buesing, Director of the UNM/NMSU Cooperative Pharmacy Program, announced Marquez's acceptance into the program. He will be recognized at the White Coat Ceremony in August 2017 as a student of the UNM PharmD Class of 2021.

Marquez is the son of Carlos H. Marquez and Virginia Preciado, he attended New Mexico State University during 2014 – 2017. Marquez was an active member of the NMSU Pre-Pharmacy Society for three years. While at NMSU, he was awarded several scholarships including the Charles and Pauline Bryant Scholarship and the Honors Excel Scholarship.

Marquez made the College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Honor list which consists of the top 15 percent students based on GPA. HE was also a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

Carlos is a certified pharmacy technician and worked at Walgreen's Pharmacy in Las Cruces.

The UNM/NMSU Cooperative Pharmacy Program began in 2007 to address the pharmacist shortage in southern New Mexico. This program proactively increases access to pharmacy education for residents of southern New Mexico by offering a collaborative curriculum leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD).

Students apply to the UNM/NMSU Cooperative Pharmacy Program during their senior year of high school. During the NMSU phase, students are required to complete 91 credit hours of pre-pharmacy courses, participate in health-related community service activities, and become familiar with pharmacy practice in their home and surrounding communities in southern New Mexico.
