Locals protest abortion

Five local church parishioners gathered Monday at the corner of South Seventh Street and Route 66 in Tucumcari for a protest against abortion.

"We are out here to spread the word, that abortion is against the law, commandments of God," said Gordan Runyan, Pastor of the Emmanuel Baptist Church of Tucumcari.

Runyan, along with four members of the church, stood bearing signs reading, "Abortion is our national sin," and, "Abortion is not the answer."

Runyan said the protest was peaceful. He said the demonstrators were not yelling or antagonizing anybody, but would speak to anyone who stopped for information.

The protest did not cause any disruption at the high school about two blocks away, said Principal Nicole Bright-Lesley. She said the protest was probably disturbed by the school's fire and bus drills.

Rubee Hendron, owner of Rubee's 2 Go restaurant, said business was not impacted by the gathering.

Runyan said the group planned to demonstrate for their cause throughout the week.
