One person is dead, another is detained in what New Mexico State Police officials are calling a homicide investigation Tuesday morning on the 400 block of North College Street in Tucumcari.
State police are investigating this incident as a homicide, said Lt. Herbert Hinders.
"I was drinking my coffee outside when I heard a gunshot, then I heard a second gun shot and a woman screaming," said Pablo Benavidez, a neighbor.
Hinders said NMSP has taken the lead in this investigation and are awaiting the arrival of the crime scene unit.
Hinders said officers of the Tucumcari Police Department responded to the initial call, Hinders stated he did not know the exact time of the call. He said the responding officers located one deceased individual at a residence on the 400 block of North College Street.
Neighbors were questioned by NMSP officers and three individuals were spotted being taken from the scene by law enforcement officials. Hinders would not comment on why the individuals were taken from the scene.
