• Ernest Ballard was named manager of Tucumcari’s Foodway grocery store

• Herman Moncus, president of the Tucumcari Historical Research Institute, accepted the deed to the old central school building which was converted into the Tucumcari Historical Museum.

• Future Teachers of America held the first annual Miss San Jon Pageant. Contestants were: Shirley Koonsman, Ann Wood, Kay Terry, Celeste Tomlinson, Pam Wooten, Shirley Garrett, Rayma Terry, Janie Stone, Carol Ayres, Debbie Porter, Linda Purcell, Diane Cornelius, Rosie Diaz and Carolyn Stone.
