Longhorns defeat Clayton, 46-29

The team starts district Saturday against Mustangs in Mountainair.

After snapping a four game losing streak, the Logan Longhorns will look for another win at Elida before they begin their District 6-2A run.

"We need to come out strong and have intensity throughout the entire game," said senior Coltin Roach.

Roach, scored 11 points against the Rattlers during Friday's 63-47 Homecoming loss at Tucumcari.

Against the Rattlers, the Longhorns were unable to overcome a nine-point deficit. Tucumcari's Timothy Reid scored 8 of his 18 points in the first quarter. Roach was held scoreless in the first period.

"(We) need to capitalize on turnovers and work to play as a team as we advance towards district play," Roach said.

The Longhorns (8-7) beat the Clayton Yellowjackets 46-29 on Saturday at Logan.

The win was the Longhorns first since 64-57 victory over Tatum on Jan. 3 at the EPAC tournament at Texico.

Lady Longhorns lose by that much

The Logan Lady Longhorns need to come together as a team to get back to their winning ways, said Harlie Roach, junior power forward.

"When we play as a team, nobody can beat us," Roach said.

Roach said the team has not played lights out since the EPAC Tournament. The Lady Longhorns lost 30-29 to Texico on Jan. 3 in the EPAC championship at Eastern New Mexico University at Portales.

"Since that game, we have not played like ourselves," Roach said.

Roach led the Lady Longhorns with 12 points in Friday's 59-41 Homecoming loss to the Lady Rattlers at Tucumcari. The Lady Longhorns dropped their fourth game in a row with a 64-53 loss on Saturday to the Clayton Lady Yellowjackets at Logan.

"We need to get back to playing good defense, when we play good defense our offense is also productive," said Karli Webb, sophomore shooting guard.

Webb said in the past games when the team gets down they get discouraged. She said the team can not let mistakes impact their play in such a way.

"We need to keep our heads up and make it up on the next play," Webb said. "We need to play strong from start to finish."

The Lady Longhorns have a tough match-up against the Lady Tigers (13-4) on Thursday at Elida before they begin their district run on Saturday at Mountainair.

Game time:

Friday: 5:30 p.m., at Elida

Saturday: 5:30 p.m., at Mountainair
