Fire strikes again at motel

An investigation is ongoing into the cause of a structure fire that damaged the vacant Paradise Inn Motel for a second time in five months.

The fire was first reported at 3:30 p.m., on Feb. 7 on the 1600 Block of West Route 66, said Doug Hogan, Tucumcari Fire Chief.

Hogan said it took a total of six agencies, Tucumcari Volunteer Fire Department, District 1-4 and Logan, five hours to contain and extinguish the fire. He said the fire hydrants in that area are old and do not supply enough water for fire suppression.

"We had to rely on the rural district's water tankers," Hogan said.

Hogan said this is the second time the motel has caught fire, with the first coming last September. He said an investigator with the State Fire Marshall's Office has been requested to aid in the investigation.
