Letter to the editor: Gun control must be priority

Florida is the latest in a uniquely American phenomenon — mass shootings.

Some, primarily Republican, politicians place the priorities of the National Rifle Association above that of most Americans. Of course this little favor gets them lots of dough and a favorable rating from the NRA so they can keep their job and get free parking at Reagan International.

Of course the flag will be lowered to half staff and prayers and condolences will be issued. There is one thing that will not be addressed — gun control.

If your car’s engine dies, do you inspect your spare tire?

In investigations you follow the facts. The common thing to all of this is high-powered guns and lots of ammo.

The Journal of Pediatrics reported last June that each week gunfire kills an average of 25 kids 17 and under. In 2016 a study by The American Journal of Medicine calculated that among 24 of the world’s wealthiest nations, the U.S. accounted for 91 percent of firearms deaths among children.

Americans do not want to do away with the Second Amendment and the politicians know that. What they do want and desperately need is some good gun controls.

Australia put in some strong controls and has not had a mass shooting since the 1960s. Controls that have wide public support include:

n Stricter gun laws,

n background checks,

n nationwide ban on assault weapons.

I was trained as an aerial gunner on B-24s near the end of World War II. I have hunted and owned guns, but in 92 years I have never needed a gun for protection.

Some politicians’ priorities are screwed up.
