Health council puts on Community Wellness Fair

Residents will be able to take advantage of 20 health screenings and information from more than 60 health related booths during the Community Wellness Fair on Saturday at the Tucumcari Convention Center.

The fair, that will be held from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m., has been organized by the Quay County Health Council and Quay County Extension Office and is being supported by many other organizations, said Brenda Bishop, Quay County Extension Service.

Health screenings including blood pressure, depression, oximetry, cholesterol, blood sugar, skin cancer, colon cancer, and breast cancer will be available. Residents will also have access to information from booths and many special activities.

The University of New Mexico’s Pharmacy School along with Dr. Dan C Trigg Hospital Pharmacy will be offering a free cholesterol and blood sugar screening. The screening is a fasting test, so you will need to fast for the 12 hours prior to your finger stick. The results will be available on site. There will be a kids’ corner ran by the Roadrunners 4-H club with games and prizes. Kids will have the opportunity to meet Flash and show off their own super hero costume.

New Mexico State University’s Cancer Outreach Program is bringing a blow up that you can walk through to learn about colon health.

The Quay County Sheriff’s booth, they will be preparing finger print identification cards for your children.

Residents can learn what it is like to operate a vehicle while under the influence at the peddle cart obstacle course ran by the New Mexico State Police.

The Tucumcari Police Department is offering car seat safety inspections. Bring your car and child’s car seat and the Safer New Mexico trained officer will make sure your seat is installed in your car correctly or help you learn to install your seat properly.

Admission to the Wellness Fair is either $1 or a can of food which will be donated the Ministry of Hope. Each participant will have the opportunity to win one of more than 70 door prizes as they register.
