Letter to the editor - April 4

Homework helps you grow

Regarding Dylan Reed’s letter about the stress of homework published March 28:

Dylan, as we grow older stress does not go away after graduation from high school or college — it increases to another level that you haven’t reached yet.

Homework is one of many tools to sharpen critical thinking and skill to help you as you walk through the days that you have ahead of you.

Homework is also a discipline that builds good character as it creates good habits. Homework is nothing more than a class/course assignment that is worked on away from school.

Believe it or not, there are people in the work force who occasionally have homework also. There are construction people, engineers, doctors and nurses, lawyers, teachers, legal aides (just to name a few) who must keep their certification current.

With that said, don’t let stress consume you. Look at homework as a challenge to help you grow instead of a stressful chore. There cannot be growth without challenge.

My grandfather Lucian Hendren Sr., (who was a lifetime resident of Tucumcari who has long since passed on) always said these words of encouragement to my mother and her siblings, to me and all of my cousins:

When you have given your 100 percent, give 10 percent more.

So Dylan, I am passing along my grandfather’s words of encouragement to you. When you have given your 100 percent, give 10 percent more.

Best of wishes to you as you continue on in your endeavors.
