Muralist welcomed back to town

More than 20 local artists and residents came out to welcome back muralist Doug Quarles during a reception Monday at The Gallery Etc. in Tucumcari.

"It's very sweet for everyone to come out and welcome me back," Quarles said. "I only wish my wife Sharon could have made the trip."

Quarles said he is back in Tucumcari to begin work on a mural that will be placed on the Tucumcari Knights of Columbus, Tucumcari Columbus Club. He said the design for the mural has been selected and he will be working on the newest mural throughout the week.

There will be some discussion while Quarles is in town about finalizing another art project for the two alleyways on the 100 block of East Main Street, said Gail Houser, MainStreet executive director.

Houser said the project is part of the Great Blocks on Main Street rehabilitation project for downtown.

Quarles, who now lives in Benson, Arizona, said these projects have come along at the perfect time, giving him a chance to return to Tucumcari and visit old friends.

"I'm excited to get to work and look forward to my time here in Tucumcari," Quarles said.
