Residents invited to meet-and-greet

The Mesalands Community College board of trustees invites the community to a meet-and-greet for the new president of the college, John Groesbeck, and his wife, Janette Groesbeck.

The event will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Mesalands Community College’s Honorable J. Bronson Moore Room in Building A in Tucumcari.

Refreshments will be served.

Cremains stolen in break-in

Tucumcari police continue to investigate a break-in of a recreational vehicle in which several items were taken, including the cremated remains of the victim’s mother.

The burglary occurred early July 23 in the 600 block of South Sixth Street. According to police, a variety of household and personal items were stolen from the RV, including jewelry and a pendant that contained the cremains.

Tucumcari Police Sgt. Patti Lopez said a small, silver-colored pendant that contained the ashes of the victim’s mother also was engraved with “John 3:16” from the Bible and an image of an angel.

Crime Stoppers is offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of the suspect or suspects in the burglary. Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 575-461-3507. All callers will remain anonymous.
