Plateau to buy Comcast cable assets

Move will allow for fiber expansion; service won't be affected

Plateau Telecommunications announced Friday it will purchase Comcast’s cable television assets in Tucumcari and expand its Plateau Fiber high-speed internet services in that market.

In a news release, Plateau stated it expected the deal to close by the end of the month.

Launa Waller, regulatory manager for Plateau, stated in an email Monday the company will hire the Comcast employees, “so there will not be a decrease (or increase) in local employees at this time.”

Waller said terms of the sale were confidential.

The news release also stated Plateau plans to upgrade the existing coaxial cable-TV system to a fiber-to-the-premises system, known as FTTP, that will make Plateau Fiber services — including gigabit-speed internet, video and voice — available to all locations Comcast passed in Tucumcari.

Waller stated Plateau’s internet pricing will be the standard Gigabit City levels of $50 to $70 a month.

Plateau stated it plans to keep cable-TV service operating for current Comcast customers during the transition.

Plateau provides internet, voice and video services to 18 counties in New Mexico and four counties in the Texas Panhandle.

“Plateau recognizes the importance of making fiber products and high speed broadband service available to New Mexico communities, and we are excited to be increasing our presence in Tucumcari,” David Robinson, CEO of Clovis-based Plateau, stated in the release.
