Tucumcari runners compete at NMMI Invite

Josh Chavez and Aleaya Lucero were Tucumcari's top boys and girls finishers Saturday during the New Mexico Military Institute Invitational in Roswell.

"The team is working hard, and times are coming down," Tucumcari coach Gary Hittson said.

Chavez led the varsity boys with a time of 17 minutes, 56 seconds over the 3-mile course, good enough for 25th. Other boys running for the Rattlers were Manny Hernandez (47th, 19:42) and Charles Prieto (62nd, 20:42).

Clovis easily won the boys team standings with 27 points, followed by Carlsbad with 78. The boys race contained 72 runners.

Lucero finished 19th overall in the girls race with a time of 22:47. Just one second behind her was teammate Erin Encinias, who finished 22nd.

Alamogordo won the girls team competition with 43 points, followed by Lovington with 54 and Clovis with 58. The girls competition contained 48 runners.

For the junior-varsity boys, Tucumcari's Nathan Mardo was 74th, finishing 24:13. Teammate Britt Lusk was 81st in 25:02.The boys JV race contained 97 runners.

For the Tucumcari JV girls, Leslie Navarrette was 38th in a time of 30:35, and Melanie Jones was 45th in a time of 34:56. The JV girls race contained 49 competitors.
