Lady Rattler finishes in top 10 at meet

Tucumcari cross-country runner Erin Encinias finished in the top 10 on Saturday during a muddy Pecos Valley Invitational in Roswell.

Coach Gary Hittson said he was pleased with his squads’ performances.

“I’m very happy with the way the teams ran today,” he said Saturday. “Now we get ready for district.”

The district meet will be Nov. 3 at a place and time to be announced.

Encinias finished ninth overall during the varsity girls race with a time of 23 minutes, 44 seconds in the 3-mile course.

Other varsity Lady Rattlers participating at the event were Aleaya Lucero (25th, 25:14), Ashley Shipley (33rd, 27:20), Leslie Naverrete (41st, 32:18) and Melanie Jones (43rd, 37:48).

The Tucumcari girls team finished sixth with 113 points. Carlsbad won the meet with 43 points, followed by Clovis with 60 and Artesia with 73.

In the varsity boys race, Josh Chavez was the top Tucumcari runner, finishing 16th in 19 minutes flat.

Teammates included Manny Hernandez (28th, 20:32), Nathan Mardo (55th, 25:54), Joe Garcia (60th, 28:45) and Britt Lusk (61st, 30:40).

The Rattlers boys team finished seventh with 207 points. Clovis won the meet with 27 points, followed by Carlsbad with 60 and New Mexico Military Institute with 85.
