Logan boys take tournament title

The Logan boys basketball team captured the Dora Tournament title with a 51-32 victory over Hagerman on Saturday night.

Dyson Day led the Longhorns (4-0) with 20 points, and teammate Chase Earle added 15.

Day also won the Wooden Award for being voted the best player of the tournament.

Logan jumped out to a 20-8 lead in the first quarter. But its defense also shined, allowing Hagerman (3-1) just 12 points the entire second half.

“Once again, the defense was the difference for us tonight,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said. “We didn't have a very good offensive night, but we were able to control the game defensively.”

Logan 65, Tatum 46

The Longhorns vaulted into the title game of the Dora Tournament with an impressive 65-46 victory over a state-ranked Tatum squad in the semifinals Friday.

Dante Sanchez led Logan with 19 points, while Day had 18 and Earle 13.

Tatum, which fell to 5-1, was ranked No. 1 in Class A by MaxPreps.com before the game.

Logan outscored Tatum 19-9 in the second quarter and 36-26 in the second half to take control.

“Tonight, our defense won us the game,” Griffiths said. “We really locked in and kept Tatum from getting in a rhythm. We also were able to handle their pressure well throughout the game.”

Logan 84, Grady/San Jon/House 57

Logan used big scoring outbursts in the second and third quarters to seize control during an 84-57 victory Thursday over Grady/San Jon/House during the Dora Tournament.

The Longhorns outscored the Bronchos 26-9 in the second period and 25-14 in the third to take a 74-45 lead.

“We started slow, but once we got going, we played pretty well,” Griffiths said. “We shot the ball much better, and it was good to see the guys gain some confidence.”

Sanchez scored 25 points to lead the Longhorns. Day added 18 points, and Earle had 16.

“We played tough in the first quarter, but they got away from us in the second,” Bronchos coach Jonathan Langan said.

Chisum Rush led the Bronchos with 26 points.

Grady/San Jon/House (1-3) defeated the Elida junior varsity on Saturday. A final score wasn't available, but Langan said Rush scored 15 points.

Elida 63, Grady/San Jon/House 52

Elida used a big second quarter to pace itself to a 63-52 victory over Grady/San Jon/House on Friday at the Dora Tournament.

The Tigers (1-2) outscored the Bronchos 20-8 in the second period to take a 30-20 lead.

“We played tough but just didn't do the little things down the stretch,” Langan said.

Rush led the Bronchos with 21 points.

Gateway Christian 59, Grady/San Jon/House 41

Gateway Christian used a big third quarter to salt away a 59-41 win Dec. 4 against Grady/San Jon/House at Grady.

The Warriors (2-1) outscored the Bronchos 24-11 in the third period to forge a 47-25 lead. The Bronchos trailed 23-14 at intermission.

“We did a really good job in the first half of shutting down their scorers,” Langan said, “but in the second half, they came alive.”

Rush led Grady/San Jon/House with 15 points.
