Quay deputies recognized

The Quay County Sheriff's Office last week recognized two deputies who showed exemplary service in the line of duty in 2018.

According to a news release on social media, Lt. Larry Cooksey was awarded the Life Saving Award for his response to a shots-fired call that required the use of a tourniquet to stop the bleeding of a person who had been shot.

"His prompt response and quick thinking saved a life," the release stated.

Undersheriff Dennis Garcia was awarded his second Medal of Valor, given to an officer who distinguishes himself or herself by conspicuous bravery under unusual, complicated or hazardous conditions and where one uses excellent judgment in accomplishing a mission, including sustaining human life.

"Garcia distinguished himself in this way when he displayed the fortitude necessary to make a calm and clear-headed decision save the life of a hostage who was being held at knifepoint," the release stated.

"His first Medal of Valor was awarded when he risked his life to clear a hotel of occupants as it was burning to the ground."
