Logan boys take fourth at EPAC

The Logan boys basketball team finished fourth at the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Eastern New Mexico University with a 56-45 loss Saturday to district foe Melrose in the third-place game.

The Buffaloes (10-2), ranked No. 2 in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com, in the first half grabbed a lead they wouldn’t relinquish with a 23-3 run.

Logan, ranked fourth in Class 1A, fell to 11-4 overall.

“We didn’t have the success that we had hoped for during the tournament,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said, “but we came out of it with some valuable lessons and a lot of positives. We will have to continue to work to get better to succeed during district play.”

Kyle Knight led the Longhorns with 17 points, and Dyson Day added 13.

Texico captured the tournament title with a 64-55 win over Fort Sumner.

Fort Sumner 67, Logan 59 (OT)

Logan’s furious comeback in the fourth quarter forced overtime, but the Longhorns couldn’t keep that momentum during a 67-59 loss to Fort Sumner in the semifinals of the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Eastern New Mexico University.

Logan outscored the Foxes 18-7 in the final period to tie the game at regulation.

“They guys never gave up and kept fighting to the end,” Griffiths said. I was proud of the way they battled.”

Dante Sanchez led the Longhorns with 18 points, and Day added 15.

Logan 75, Elida 69

Sanchez scored a season-high 28 points to lead the Longhorns to a 75-69 victory over Elida in the first round Wednesday of the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Melrose.

Logan went on a 15-5 run in the third quarter to forge a 50-39 lead and hung on the rest of the way.

Knight added 18 points for Logan, and teammate Day scored 11.

The Tigers fell to 5-5 overall.

Dora 53, Grady 47

Dora toppled Grady 53-47 during a consolation game Saturday at the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Eastern New Mexico University.

Chisum Rush scored 18 points to lead the Bronchos, while teammate Dustin Bryant added 13.

The Bronchos fell to 3-9 overall. The victorious Coyotes improved to 6-6.

Texico 72, Grady 39

The state-ranked and top-seeded Wolverines outmuscled the Bronchos 72-39 during a quarterfinal game Thursday at the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Eastern New Mexico University.

Texico commanded a 44-18 lead at halftime and improved to 12-2 overall.

Rush led Grady with 15 points.

Grady 44, Floyd 28

The Bronchos outscored Floyd 26-6 in the second half to secure a 44-28 victory Wednesday in the opening round of the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Melrose.

“We switched to a matchup zone and did a great job rotating and rebounding,” coach Jonathan Langan said of his team’s surge.

Rush led the Bronchos with 16 points, while Isaiah Mitchell added 12.

Floyd fell to 1-6 overall.
