Fourth suspect detained in home invasion

A fourth suspect — a juvenile — recently was detained for his alleged role in a violent home invasion in Tucumcari in October that hospitalized the victim.

Albuquerque police arrested a 17-year-old male juvenile on charges of aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, false imprisonment and interference with communications. He was being held in the Bernalillo County juvenile-detention facility, said Quay County Sheriff Russell Shafer.

Albuquerque police also recently arrested Jamal Jones, 19, on a warrant issued by the Quay County Sheriff’s Office on charges of aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, false imprisonment and interference with communications. He was extradited Jan. 22 and remains in the Quay County Detention Center in Tucumcari.

Shafer would not discount the possibility of other suspects involved, and deputies still were investigating.

“We’re still looking at other options,” he said. “We haven’t closed the case.”

Two other suspects, Setheria Paul Kolyer, 18, and Riley J. Severeid, 18, both of Tucumcari, were arrested in late October by Quay County sheriff’s deputies in connection with the Oct. 3 home invasion. Robbers wearing masks and gloves tied up and beat the victim at gunpoint in the 3900 block of East Maple Avenue. They cut his phone line, and his residence was ransacked.

The robbers took a small safe, a large sum of money, two pistols, a shotgun, cellphone and a Chevrolet Silverado extended cab pickup truck. The remnants of the safe later were recovered at Five Mile Park in Tucumcari.

The victim was taken to Trigg Memorial Hospital in Tucumcari for treatment of his bleeding head injuries and released.

According to online court records, Severeid pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary, conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary and distribution or intent to distribute marijuana in a plea agreement. The prosecutor dismissed the other charges of larceny, conspiracy to commit larceny, tampering with evidence, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, false imprisonment, criminal damage to property and possession of drug paraphernalia. No sentencing date has been set.

Kolyer faces charges of aggravated burglary, conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary, aggravated battery, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, false imprisonment, two counts of interference with communications, larceny, conspiracy to commit larceny, tampering with evidence, criminal damage to property, use or possession of drug paraphernalia and distribution or intent to distribute marijuana.
