Logan boys fall to Melrose

The Logan boys basketball team fell to Melrose 73-65 in overtime in the semifinal Thursday of the Class 1A, District 6 tournament.

The Longhorns, which fell to 20-7 overall, started slowly and were behind 34-22 at halftime. They stormed back with a 34-22 second half to force overtime.

“We had a shot to win it in regulation,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said. “Melrose is a really good team, and they made the plays down the stretch to come out on top. I was proud of the guys for how they fought all night.”

Kyle Knight led the Longhorns with 16 points. Close behind were Dyson Day with 15, Dante Sanchez with 13 and Chase Earle with 10.

Melrose improved to 20-7 overall.

Logan was seeded fourth in the Class 1A state tournament and will host No. 13-seed Cimarron (17-11) on Saturday. The winner will play the winner of the Melrose-Animas matchup on March 13 at Bernalillo.

Quernado (26-1) is the No. 1 seed, and Fort Sumner (20-8) is the second seed. Maxwell (20-4) is the third seed.

The March 14 semifinals and March 16 championship will be at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.

Melrose 64, Grady 47

Grady/San Jon/House couldn’t get anything going in the first half during a 64-47 loss Feb. 26 in the second round of the district tournament.

The Buffalos held the Bronchos to one field goal during the half while staking a 26-5 lead.

Chisum Rush, who scored 29 of his 31 points in the second half, led Grady.

Grady fell to 8-17 overall. Reflecting on the season, Grady coach Jonathan Langan said: “I would definitely say it didn’t turn out how we wanted as far as the win-loss column goes, but as far as building team chemistry and player development, I think we accomplished some great feats.”

Grady 79, Clovis Christian 51

Grady took control of a semi-close game with a 43-25 surge in the second half to secure a 79-51 victory Feb. 25 in the opening round of the district tournament.

Rush scored 33 points to lead the Bronchos, while teammates Chad Becerra added 13 and Anthony Lopez 12.

Clovis Christian fell to 3-17 overall.
